NO DRILLING! NO COMPROMISE!

The land and water cannot depend on the hollow promises of politicians and corporations. Over and over, regulations fail to protect the land and water that gives us life. Counting on the government to protect us is no safer than counting on the oil and gas companies to drill safely. That’s why we started Marcellus Earth First! To make space in the gas drilling debate for those of us that are ready to take action to defend our home.

The drilling is certainly a problem in this area. 1- the science behind it is questionable. There is no real knowledge about the long term effects of these type operations but what little science there is indicates it is bad in many ways. Spliting rock deep in the earth with liquids poses the potential for great damage. Also it raises the question which is unanswered where will these liquids eventually go? They will not stay where they are injected clearly. Some day they will come back to the surface.
2-which leads to the next question what all is being injected into the earth? Drilling companies are very evasive on answering this. 3- The long term effects of these injections are also unknown. There is a very high rate of autism and other developmental disorders in northern and central Pa. which to a certain extent is linked to enviromental factors traced back to the strip mining in this area of years gone past. So what will be the effect of this much more intrusive injection of chemicals into the earth in this region? I do not believe that doing this will result in future generations having forests and fields lush with native vegitation and wildlife and healthy well developed children. Unless the drillers can provide evidence that they are doing no harm supported by studies from non-involved academics this is a big risk we are taking. The fact that most drilling sites are manned for many hours by a rent a cop who is not trained or equiped to deal with a well blow out is also disturbing. Having the potential for a huge fire in the center of our forests could be a disaster waiting to happen.
